how to start graphical mandrake?

when i boot to mandrake 9.2, it goes to the terminal control... how can i go to the graphical desktop?

esteeven 02-08-2004 03:42 PM

type in your username, then your password and then startx --- this is the usual way to start the graphical environment if it's installed.

santasballz 02-08-2004 03:45 PM

when i try to type in my password, it doesn't show up... like as if the keyboard isnt plugged. but i know it is plugged because i was able to type in the user name...

DrOzz 02-08-2004 03:47 PM

that is how it is supposed to be ....
just type it in and press enter
it will not show you anything ...
another security feature ;-)

Is there anyway to disable that feature?

just wondering, if linux is full of choices... it must support disabling it.

Geert.

to the best of my knowledge... no, its a holdover from the old Unix days

bigjohn 02-08-2004 06:44 PM

I'm sure that's how it is as default, but I'm convinced that I've read some sh1t about password shadowing (I think that's what it's called, don't quote me, if I remember I'll have a look at my copy of Running Linux - from O'Really!).

John
