How to speed up networking performance?

I wanted to know if there was a quick way that I can improve networking performance even though I am heavily relying on the GUI to make changes to any settings. I am looking to improve files transfer speeds and responsiveness. It seems like it takes a little while for the other machines on the LAN to see and access the shared files. I am running gigabit all the way around with 9000k frames. Performance is pretty good all around except for when it comes to accessing files from this machine. The other machines are running XP and OSX. Thanks.

Could be a problem with your gigabit setup on that machine. When I switched to gigabit the default driver and settings couldn't cope with it. I used iperf and wireshark to pin down that I was getting TCP errors - hence the sluggish performance - and then installed the latest driver and tweaked the buffer settings to get rid of errors. That being said even on my Opteron server I can only get about 500 Mbits out of the theoretical 1 Gbit as you hit bottlenecks elsewhere. Did look at large frames but because I've got a mixed environment not worth the effort.
