how to solve the checkinstall problem

debian:/usr/src/testingzaptel/zaptel-1.2.15# checkinstall -D

i'm using the debian with permission as a root..

espcially debian is not need using sudo as command.

for ubuntu, the problem will be solve:
sudo <uID> checkinstall

but for debian,

the problem is coming out...

anyone please me a guide line...thanks
