How to shutdown X server in Redhat 8

This may sounds kind of wierd but I cannot get my X server to shutdown. I have read that in order to shut it down on Redhat 8, you push ctl + atl+ backspace keys. When I do this it simply logs me out of my session. Am I missing something? I'm trying to shut it down so that I can install a graphics driver for an Nvidia card. I haven't found much information that can help me, hopefully someone from here can, since I am kind of new to Linux.

Hello!

go to console: e.g. CTRL+ALT+F1

Logín as "root"

init 3

and then you can install the graphics driver

I'm using RH8 because I have to for work, that is the only reason why.
I will try the init 3 thing and let you guys know.

That worked I was able to install the driver.

Now I have to see if I can compile my 3D application and make it run.
