How to share printer in Linux ?
Let's say I got 3 computers in an office, all of them installed with Suse/Mandriva Linux. Computer A is connected directly to a HP Printer, how to make another 2 computers to share the same printer? What hardware do I need? How to do the setting in Linux?

You need to set up CUPS on the computer connected with the printer, then setup CUPS on the other two printers to print to the other printer. Read about CUPS Configuration.

Assuming you have it installed, the first and easiest place to go to get started setting up your printers is here: http://localhost:631/ After that, search here on LQ for CUPS setup and stuff like that. I was involved in a recent thread about setting up CUPS, but I don't have a link to the thread.

you can configure cups to "publish" its printers on the local network. client pcs with cups can access those printers. in case you use yast for configuration its really easy to do.
the before mentioned webinterface is nice too ;-) |

1. Make sure CUPS is installed on all the computers you have.
2. Install the printer on one of the computers and configure it through the link I gave you. IOW, click on Add a Printer, configure it, then click on the publish button. 3. Use the exact same link at the client computers and configure the printers on them. The URL on the client computers will look like this: ipp://192.168.1.40:631/printers/EpsonDX6050. The only two things that will change are the IP address of the computer where the printer actually is and the name of the printer. Do Not delete the ":631" part or it simply won't work. Give it a try. If you have specific questions about what to enter on a particular page, ask. |
