how to setup an internet connection in ubuntu

hello,i am a newbie to linux . i am xp user and just want to switch to linux plateform .i am having a bsnl broadband connection and want to configure the internet connection on my ubuntu plateform so please tell me in detail. thanks

You should give some more information.
Do you use a router, a modem?
Wireless, wired?
Which network card are you using?

i am using seperate modem whose ip address is something like 192.168.something

You need to supply complete information.
Is this DSL or cable?
Do you have a router?
Have you tried the Ubuntu network setup utility?
