How to set up my computer as a webserver

I'm running on RH Linux 9 with apache. The web server works great for my IP address.

(ie http://123.45.67.89 points to my compter from the public and the webserver serves the files)

What I would like to do is register a domain name (let's say bcarl314.com) and have that point to my computer.

What do I need to do to make that happen?

Should I set up my computer as a nameserver? If so, how do I do that?

Thanks

Hi,

You cant just make your own name up, you have to register a domain name which will usually cost you some money, say 10 UK pound for a year.

You will then normally be able to log into whoevers website you registered with and point the domain name to your IP. You can also do other things like create e-mail aliases and forward them to other e-mail address's etc.

the last time I registered a couple of domain names I used www.freeparking.com

Yeah, I know I need to purchase the domain name.

The registrar I usually use is www.godaddy.com ($10 / yr)

However, there is no method of pointing my domain to an IP address through them, only to a nameserver. (ns1.nameserver.net as an example)

How do I get a nameserver that will correctly resolve my domain name to my IP address?

err, they should have there own nameservers ! if they dont go somewhere else.

If you're not running your own dns or for some reason you could try a third party DNS service. I have found that dns.widge.net very satisfactory and reasonably priced.
