How to set up Firewall on mandriva 2006
well my problem is self-explanatory

im clueless in how to set up your firewall in mandriva 2006 i went to configure my computer and went to security and i clicked on set up on a personal firewall....

and it asks me which service would you like to allow the internet to connect to?

and there's the options

web server
domain name server
SSH server
FTP server
mail server
POP and IMAP server
Echo request (ping)

i would appreciate if somebody can explain me what each one do and what else should i do to set up a firewall and which ones i should click on to allow and why

the typical setting you should need are DNS, HTTP HTTPS, POP & IMAP. YOu can do FTP if you want but it will show up when someone scans your ports. no worries though it shows up closed but best thing is to show up stealth.

i will use the internet for checking email and browsing and maybe so p2p programs and if possible much later i will try to play some games on linux by using winex or cedega that's about it

in mandriva if you don't clcik anything then you have no firewall it would be like M$'s firewall the holy grail of overstatement.i think web server is the one to click for HTTP, HTTPS

ok thanks for help guys i got some other questions regarding the firewall let's say i have a program that wants me to open certain port

do i just go to my router and open that port by going http:192.1681.1 and following wizard and putting the port i want to use or do i have to do something else with my firewall

what I mean by all this if I open port through router will it suffice to make the program work or will i have to mess with firewall too?
