How to set up a network from Kubuntu to Slax - help needed

Earlier in the year I set up Kubuntu on my desktop machine using Wubi to dual boot.
I am now using it as my main OS and it is now upgraded to Intrepid Ibex and KDE 4.10.
Because I found I preferred to use it I have now taken a look at my struggling low spec laptop.
I have reformatted the laptop and completely removed the original OS replacing it with an HDD frugal install of Slax with KDE 3.5 which seems to suit such a low spec machine.
This works beautifully, the machine has never worked so quickly.
I can connect to the internet with it no problem using wired or wireless connection to my router.
However, I now find I have no networking between the two machines and can't quite work out the proper way to do it between these 2 different distros and 2 different versions of KDE.
I would be grateful for any help, bearing in mind that I am used to the GUI way of doing things nowadays, although in the dim & distant past I did have a bit of a tinker around with both MSDOS and PCDOS in the days before everything became GUI-centric so may be able to type commands in Konsole providing I know what they should be.
Thanks in advance.

Do you want to swap files between the two system (use NFS - one computer will be a nfs server, the other will be client which can mount a shared directory from the server automatically at boot time) or to be able to use one computer to execute a command on the other (use ssh - it can also copy files between systems)?

I want to be able to copy/move files between the desktop & laptop machines.
It would also be nice, but not essential, to be able to access the printer connected to the dektop from the laptop, but it's not too hard to copy the file across and then print.

You could use NFS server/client (you'll find tons of tutorials)

When it comes to your printer, you'll probably need to add a printer on a network to your laptop machine.

Btw, to do any of this, you must assign static IPs to both computers (don't use dhcp)

What distros are you using?

As I said, google something about NFS servers / clients on Ubuntu/Slax. You might also try fish/ssh in konqueror:
