How to select text with keyboard on KDE?

If I switch Num Lock on I can select text as I move the cursor with the arrow keys, but holding down Shift doesn't select text. How do I select text with the keyboard without using num lock (since using num lock is far from ideal)?

KDE on Slackware 11.0 running on Microsoft Virtual PC.

On my system (MEPIS/KDE/Kedit), I can select text with:

regular arrow keys + shift (numlock on or off)
keypad with numlock on + shift
The Mouse!!!

Works the same way in OpenOffice, but NOT in Konsole

It seems to be a problem with Microsoft Virtual PC not sending the keycodes properly (rolls eyes).
