How to scan a hard drive?

I'm getting a new hard drive and I wanted to know what utilities to use to do a surface scan to check it for errors and bad clusters/sectors.

have a look on your hard drive, most new hard drives have alittle text on them, should give you a web site address, visit that site if any and you will be able to download a program for that disk.

Only other way i know, is do a dos scan..

Other people may have other ideas.
