How to run KDE and Gnome in Linux Mint
 

I am fairly new to Linux (returning newbie)

When I used Ubuntu I could install KDE through some commands in terminal and then select which desktop to use before logging on.

Upon returning to linux, I have decided (after some live cd testing of various distros) to go with Linux Mint.

I would like to do the same thing in linux mint as I did in ubuntu i.e select which desktop to use. By default it is Gnome but I would like to try KDE also, without installing a whole new installation. I cant seem to find the answer in other posts.

So, to summarise.

I would like to be able to select which desktop to use in Linux Mint.

Since Mint is modified Ubuntu, probably a very similar process. I don't know if they have fancy stuff to do this, but you can make the GDM login manager have another entry for an installed KDE with minimal fuss: https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...om-gdm-218335/

I think Mint uses Ubuntu Software Repositories then adds its own additional software. Either way, you need to install the kubuntu-desktop package or the linux Mine equivalent. Once it is installed, it will automatically give you the option to choose it. Either use synaptic, or

For those users wanting to add KDE desktop in Linux Mint,

Simply go to Synaptic Package Manager in Menu >> Administration

and search for KDE-Desktop select in to install, let it do the business ... Sorted
