How to run Gnome Classic on Debian 7
 

Is there a guide or instructions on how to run Gnome Classic? I have installed a few programs with Synaptic. Some appear in the drop down menus to run, but some don't seem to have created a menu entry. Is there something I need to do to make them accessible? It looks like I could have installed them with the "Add/Remove Software" menu entry under system tools or the GDebi Package Installer on the same menu.
On earlier desktops I could just click/drag an Icon to the desktop and select it from there. That does not seem to work here. I was able to drag the System Monitor Icon to the screen top and select it from there.

Debian 7 runs GNOME shell and what you see is the GNOME Fall Back mode. It is not a full-fledged classic mode by any stretch! It provides some basic functionality though.

To get the programs to show up in the menus, alacarte might help.

If that is as good as it gets, I will continue with other desktops. Thank you...

That might be a good idea if you do not prefer GNOME shell. At that stage, it was just a fallback option for video cards that were unable to render GNOME shell.

What I am looking for is a Debian 7 with a comfortable Desktop. I am sticking with Debian because of its relationship with Raspberry Pi. I dabble a little in software and hardware. I want a system that I can log into remote with Windows Remote Desktop. The other remote software does not seem to include audio. It should allow multiple logons from multiple users. I also do a little work with Microprocessors. There are two Raspberry Pi's in my LAN. The machine I am using needs to stay available to backup a few critical apps. I don't want to alter its configuration. There is no urgency involved for me, this is what I choose to do for fun!
