how to run .dat , .mpg ,.avi file in RHEL as 4.0
 

hi

i have just installed Redhat Linux AS 4.0 in my system.
I am not able to run my songs and videos in it like .DAT,.MPG OR .AVI

I am a newbie to LINUX. Would you please help me..

Try to install the packages "mplayer" or "vlc". Afterwards open a terminal and run "vlc" or "mplayer <filename>" to watch or listen to your files. Mplayer has a ton of options - check them out with "man mplayer". mplayer comes with an encoder called "mencoder" to produce your own *.whatever files or convert existing ones into other formats.

You will need some repository like freshrpms [1] for that as RHEL4 does not include these packages in Red Hat Network because they are not open source.
