how to rum java on linux and set path for the same

this is mita majumdar
i am from india and i am doing my masters in computer applications
as i am a novice in this feild i will require all the guidence of u experienced people out there
well
i have a problem that i am not able to run java on linux
as i have the package
but there is some problem in the path
please help me so that i could set the path properly
i would also know about the problem with the sound driver
as i have loaded the operating system my self after complition when i checked the test sound there was no sound , but when i check the sound card then it shows the it have dected the sound card successfully
