Ok can you give a little more info?

What version of linux is this?
Is this a Nvidia or Ati or whatever video card?
Did you make a backup of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file?
What error message are you getting?

Suggest : Run the livecd, Ubuntu 8.10,
and save the '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' file to "USB-key",
then you have a backup.

And always keep backups of 'xorg.conf', where
it can be reached, e.g. in /etc/X11/backup_ati/
( Make a backup/ folder for each version of the file.)
.....
