Unhappy How to rescue data from a hard disk with bad sectors

Is DD image the way to go?

I accept I will have to discard the hard disk after I save the data from it.

I also can use Windows 7 which has chkdsk

Thanks a lot, experts on Linux Questions!!

The tool for imaging a disk with bad sectors is ddrescue.

Create a disk image of your disk, (I'd use ddrescue), then use the tools on the image you created, if you mess up you can have a second copy to work on, etc.

(Photorec is a good tool, if you can't access anything much by loop mounting your disk image.)

Agree on photorec - I have used it many times on disks and images to pull files and it works. Not sure about chkdsk on win7, thought that was only checking file system integrity and only on ntfs?
