How to remove Ubuntu from dual boot with vista WITHOUT recov disk?

Long story short, I installed Ubuntu on an external hard drive and dual booted it from my Thinkpad with vista installed. Something went wrong and I had to format my external hard drive, so now it's empty and linux is no longer on there. However, when I boot up, Ubuntu still shows up as an option, even though I can't use it. How do I remove it so that my system will boot into vista automatically? Note: I don't have a recov disk, or in fact, even a cd drive since I don't have the base for my thinkpad. I do, however, still have the external hard drive.

Thanks in advanced.

Where is the grub configuration file?
The menu lives in /boot/grub/menu.lst ... but where is it? Find it - I'm guessing you have a small partition on your HDD using it. Access it with windows, and edit the file. It's pretty well commented.

Alternatively, fix the mbr from windows
