If you are having trouble with making links to directories on your desktop, if you right click on the desktop and select "Create New > Link to Location(URL)" instead of "Create New > Basic link to file or directory" you won't get an arrow in the first but you will in the second.

trust me i've been through it, and know what does and doesn't add the arrow. now as i stated above it's just a matter of changing the arrow image out for a transparent one.
