Hi, I'm an Ubuntu user from Brazil and I really need help with something.
Yesterday I installed KDE using these commands, sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
When I should have used the Ubuntu's programs center. So it was very heavy and I decided to install Gnome, which I did. The problem is that the KDE now opens in the OS login screen replacing the original Ubuntu screen, and I was not able to remove. I started looking for tutorials on line and did these commands to try delete the KDE greeter: sudo apt-get purge lightdm
sudo apt-get install lightdm
sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm
(It show me that I don't have the gdm)
But there was an odd bug here. The KDE screen was not excluded, then it opens the Gnome Login screen (No problem so far), but the Unity option just vanished! I didn't nothing to exclude the Unity. What should I do?
Thanks. I was able to change using sudo update-alternatives --config default.plymouth , but form some reason I'm logging straight to Gnome, there's no option to Unity (Bu I checked, I still have it)

This doesn't solve your problem Angus, but I would highly recommend that you backup your root and home partitions before carrying out any major changes to your system (and should be doing so on a regular basis anyway).
That way, if things go awry, you can easily restore the partitions and negate any damage caused.
Everything it's OK now. I'm not going to use Unity again, I'm fine with Gnome. It's just weird that the greeter don't show it anymore. The sudo update-alternatives --config default.plymouth only gave the option to change the Kubuntu logo to Ubuntu when I'm starting my computer.
If you don't have much on this pc then I suggest installing ubuntu-gnome or ubuntu-mate when the LTS version comes out in April too be free of Unity.
Quote:
cat /etc/X11/default-display-manager
will show you which display manager you are using.
The plymouth does not matter that much. I removed mine, or at least customised it via kdmrc and on boot the system looks for 'splash image' but cannot find it, still the system still boots.
