How to remove extra TTY instances?

While troubleshooting I inadvertantly opened up 7 instances of help in Feisty. Now, every application shows 7 instances running - 6 on the top panel, one in the lower left panel. Closing one closes all - temporarily. Rebooting did not help. Removing .local and restarting did not either.

It may be connected to TTY1 through 6.

Can anyone tell me how to reduce the number of instances applications running at one time?

It sounds more like there are 7 instances of the window list program running in your gnome panel. You can remove ones you do not want by right clicking on the little vertical bar to the left of one of the places where running programs displays, and clicking remove from panel.

See here: http://porpoisehead.net/misc/panel.png

If you accidentally remove all of them, you and right click on a panel (the bar at the top or bottom of the screen), and click add to panel and select window list.
