How to remotely connect to running KDE session in SuSE 11.0?
 

I have the following problem: in openSuSE 10.3 I was using VNC to access remotely from Windows the running KDE session. It was relatievely simple to set up such connection because there was an appropriate tag (Remote Access) in the 'Graphics card and Monitor' card in YaST2. Unfortunately, this tag is missing in SuSE 11.0. What can I do? I can still open new remote session via VNC (using ports 5901 or 5902), but it closes together with the connection. When I try connecting to port 5900, as I was doing previously, the connection is closed immediately by the server.

It sounds like you had a certain package installed in 10.3 which you don't have installed in 11. So you just need to work out what package that was and install it in 11. I suspect the package in question is called kdenetwork3-vnc.

Thank you for your hint, arizonagroovejet. It encouraged me to study this problem in more detail and here are the results. In SuSE 11.0 with KDE 4 there is a program named Krfb/KDE4 which should be used for the remote connection to the running session. Unfortunately in my case it did not work. When I tried to connect using various VNC clients (eg. UltraVNC, TightVNC) I always got a message about wrong protocol. So I removed Krfb/KDE4 and installed kdenetwork3-vnc. This gave me an access to the older version of Krfb which - surprise! - works fine. I can now connect from Windows with UltraVNC or TightVNC client using standard port 5900.

By the way: does anyone know what are the differences between VNC protocols in KDE3 and 4 versions?
