how to recover lost sound?

Hi, I have Linux Mint 17.3 Rosa on a Gateway laptop. Got it used and friend put Linux on it. Has run fine, generally, till the other day lost sound. Was watching youtube, then a friend used the computer briefly. Then a bit later noticed sound was lost. Thanks for any help, N

Check to see if the sound is muted.

+1 ... either with the GUI or with the CLI utility, alsamixer ("MM" in a channel instead of a volume level means it is muted).

Cheers :-)

Hi, Much thanks for the replies. Turned out a friend of mine merely entered "volume control" into my laptop's search field. He's much more 'puter savvy than I since I didn't even know of that search field. This gateway laptop and this linux OS I'm both new to. Now I've got another prob requiring another thread. A newbie in more arenas than this, Nixtr
