How to recover deleted directory in Ubuntu 8.04?

Dear friends,
I deleted a directory in Ubuntu 8.04 by rm -rf command. Now I need to recover it and I don't know how to do that.

Please if any one knows how to do that let me know. This is the directory of my PhD thesis which need to be prepared soon and no backup is available. Please help me.

Since you really need this data - I would not screw around - buy a copy of Spinrite and try that. There maybe other ways, but this generally seems to always be mentioned as the gold standard of data recovery from hard drives.

Someone else with more experience may be along to give you some better ideas, but that is where I would start.

If you really intend to recover this, unmount the involved partition as soon as possible.

Each second that passes by with the drive being mounted as read/write your chance to recover anything decreases.

After that, I suggest to make a backup or the whole device using dd.

And after that, you can start to experiment with any tool(s) of your choice without fear of destroying anything. However there's absolutely no way to warrant that you are being able to recover any -meaningful- thing. Even if you buy the most expensive software in the world. If the data has been overwritten by anything else you can say bye.

I think that it doesn't need to be said by now, but next time if you value something, do backups and save them in a different physical location.
