How to read linux Oops
Hello. New to the forum, but I've been using Linux for over a year now. I've had a recent problem that generated lots of errors in the syslog, messages, and kernel log files. Since they're in all three, I am assuming that they are kernel error messages. I am having a hard time understanding how to interpret the error messages. I'm not looking for someone to solve my problem, only how do I read and interpret these messages. Sorry in advance if this is not in the right area of the forum. I'm running 64studio with kernel 2.6.19-rt12
Here's a sample from the kernel log: Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: sibling Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: task PC pid father child younger older Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: init S [dfb015b0] DFB03B30 0 1 0 2 (NOTLB) Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: dfb03b44 00000086 00000002 dfb03b30 dfb03b2c 00000002 00000000 045ad100 Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: 000849c9 00084936 00000082 0000000a dfb016c8 dfb015b0 c032b440 045ad100 Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: 000849c9 00000000 00000000 c2c214a0 c2c214a0 0000000a c037e280 c014b42b Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: Call Trace: Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: [<c014b42b>] handle_level_irq+0x89/0xee Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: [<c012981e>] lock_timer_base+0x15/0x31 Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: [<c02ca403>] schedule+0xcd/0xe9 Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: [<c02caab6>] schedule_timeout+0x79/0x96 Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: [<c013350c>] remove_wait_queue+0xb/0x30 Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: [<c012996d>] process_timeout+0x0/0x5 Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: [<c0173c17>] do_select+0x379/0x3d8 Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: [<c01741be>] __pollwait+0x0/0xb2 Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: [<c011bbc4>] default_wake_function+0x0/0x16 Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: [<c011bbba>] try_to_wake_up+0x3a5/0x3af Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: [<c0149c89>] redirect_hardirq+0x6e/0x7e Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: [<c011bc63>] wake_up_process+0x19/0x1b Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: [<c0119a3a>] __activate_task+0x1c/0x29 Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: [<c02ca166>] __schedule+0xb1f/0xbf2 Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: [<c02ca1b4>] __schedule+0xb6d/0xbf2 Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: [<c02ca20f>] __schedule+0xbc8/0xbf2 Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: [<c0137b73>] handle_tick_broadcast+0x11/0x12 Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: [<c0106397>] timer_interrupt+0x46/0x4c Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: [<c0137b73>] handle_tick_broadcast+0x11/0x12 Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: [<c0106397>] timer_interrupt+0x46/0x4c Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: [<c0149cda>] handle_IRQ_event+0x41/0xb7 Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: [<c0106e6c>] enable_8259A_irq+0xd/0x42 Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: [<c014b484>] handle_level_irq+0xe2/0xee Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: [<c0105666>] do_IRQ+0xac/0xce Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: [<c01038de>] common_interrupt+0x1a/0x20 Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: [<c0177895>] __d_lookup+0xe4/0xee Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: [<c016e872>] do_lookup+0x4f/0x143 Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: [<c0177dd1>] dput+0x1a/0x11b Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: [<c0170bc3>] __link_path_walk+0xcba/0xdf3 Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: [<c02ca1b4>] __schedule+0xb6d/0xbf2 Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: [<c0119aa1>] task_rq_lock+0x31/0x58 Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: [<c0173f16>] core_sys_select+0x2a0/0x2c1 Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: [<c017bab0>] mntput_no_expire+0x11/0x6e Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: [<c01644dc>] kmem_cache_free+0xba/0xc1 Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: [<c016fd58>] getname+0x59/0x8f Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: [<c016adb9>] cp_new_stat64+0xfc/0x10e Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: [<c0174310>] sys_select+0xa0/0x18b Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: [<c0102f4f>] syscall_call+0x7/0xb Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: ======================= Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: migration/0 S [dfb00af0] DFB25F6C 0 2 1 3 (L-TLB) Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: dfb25f80 00000046 00000002 dfb25f6c dfb25f68 c011bbba c011bc63 87606b00 Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: 000849b0 00000000 00000001 00000001 dfb00c08 dfb00af0 c032b440 87606b00 Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: 000849b0 00000000 00000000 c2c214a0 00000020 d6796e70 c2ca181c c2ca14a0 Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: Call Trace: Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: [<c011bbba>] try_to_wake_up+0x3a5/0x3af Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: [<c011bc63>] wake_up_process+0x19/0x1b Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: [<c011dc40>] migration_thread+0x0/0x211 Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: [<c02ca403>] schedule+0xcd/0xe9 Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: [<c011ddcc>] migration_thread+0x18c/0x211 Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: [<c011dc40>] migration_thread+0x0/0x211 Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: [<c011dc40>] migration_thread+0x0/0x211 Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: [<c0133304>] kthread+0xc0/0xec Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: [<c0133244>] kthread+0x0/0xec Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: [<c0103a9f>] kernel_thread_helper+0x7/0x10 Apr 10 05:47:50 localhost kernel: ======================= |
For esoteric topics like that you really should visit the http://kerneltrap.org/ FAQ pages and forums. That's the place for finding guys who can fluently read kernelese.
