How to re-install only root partition of Debian 6

I'd like to re-install just my / partition in debian squeeze. I have separate /, boot, and home partitions. The reason I'm doing this is because I hastily followed different tutorials trying to get gimp 2.8 installed and now when trying to install nearly anything I get the error: E: Broken packages. I've tried changing sources.list to the defaults, and then update and upgrade, but still get the error. The only thing I can think to do is re install my root partition. But if there is a better solution I'd love to hear it. If not, how do I go about doing this? I still have the DVD, can I just use that?

use aptitude or synaptic to fix or remove the broken packages. No need to mess with reinstalling.

I would use GIMP 2.8 from the Mepis repo, or build it from source.
