how to partition my 20GB harddisk properly for Linux?

Hi, everyone!

I've got a 20GB harddisk and I want to install Linux on it, how can i partiton it appropriately?
I don't want the installation procedure to partition it automatically, for the previous installation only
generated three partition as follows:
/boot
/
linux swap

What I want is a partition such as /usr, /var, and so on, but I don't know how to carry it out because I am not quite clear the required disk space for each partition.

Hopes for your suggestions!
