Thanks for the link, but I had it figured out already.
The trick was to make a link in the boot directory to link in the debain root directory which links to the /boot directory.
For some odd reason I couldn't get it to link directly.

So my next goals are: to get my tv-card running (right now it can't find /dev/video0 although it's clearly there), to get sound going (hoping I've installed the correct driver in the kernel) to get my linmodem going and to connect to the internet.
