how to optimize performance of squid by cache size and refresh pattern

plz post brief about
1) how can we check squid size,
2) how can we update/modify cache size(basic logic behind the cache size of squid while considering PC hardware)
3) other ways to optimize the performance of squidproxy
4) refresh pattern is helpful to speed up the squidproxy ??

The size of the cache stored on disk? I suppose "du -sh" could do it but that would be a bit expensive. If the cache is on a separate mount point a simple df command will do the trick.

The maximum size of the disk cache is set in squid.conf by the cache_dir directive. You can change it with an editor and issue "squid -k reconfigure" while squid is running.
