How to optimize Linux internet connection

Hii all, how can I optimize my Ubuntu Internet connection, am having a 1mb/s internet connection & am only downloading with 20Kb/s to 30 Kb/s although I can download same downloads using other operating systems with 100 Kb/s but ofcourse I use download managers (Internet download manager, Free download manager, etc ..)although I tried Using Kget, GwGet, Downloader for X but i think they don't connect to servers more than 2 connections. So is their a way for Ubuntu or SuSE to obtain my Internet Connection & connects to servers with more than 1 connection for eg. 8 so I can get my full speed of Internet .. i.e torrents also are slow too same average speed. Any Ideas Thanks.
