How to Open Bittorrent Port on Ubuntu
 
I am running the latest edition of Ubuntu which I just installed a few days ago, and I am trying to download a torrent using the Transmission BitTorrent Client. However when I go into Edit -> Preferences and it tries to check the port 51413 it says the port is closed. Does anybody know how I can open the port and allow me to download torrents?

You can download torrents without the port open, but they generally go slower. To open the port, you probably need to check your router, not ubuntu. Forward TCP/51413 to your ubuntu PC.

Oh okay, I'd need to go through the router to set it... I am currently using the system in school, it's through a tech system class and we're working with Linux Administration, so I don't think I can get to the school's router and set that port to open for the computer. Is there another port I should try, or will it all work fine without an Incoming TCP Port?

It'll work slow without incoming. PSA: You shouldn't be torrenting at school, what are you trying to do, loose your network access?

The school's network is likely monitored, and they're probably watching for this type of activity. Learn the difference between work and play.

(I'm not debating whether you're torrenting legitimate content, just that you're probably using a controlled network for reasons outside its intended purpose.)

I'm using torrenting to download the Debain ISO's, and my teacher is the Director of Technology for the entire school board. I'm all set with privileges.

Well excuse me and my bofh ways. Guess I made a poor assumption that if you were working with the "Director of Technology for the entire school board" that he'd know how to open a port on his firewall. Happy torrenting.

Well I'm sure that the issue isn't with not knowing how to open it, but just the fact that we can't set anything with the router. Our school's network is upkept from a consultant, so technically he would be the one in charge of the network administration, but he's not around a lot to ask about opening the port... I think it may be better to just go with the Networked CD of Debian and download the packages online, since bittorrent may prove to be a bit of a hassle.
