How to Mount cdrom in RH Pro Wkstation? Help needed!

Hi, can anyone with basic RH expertise help out with a mounting of cdrom question? i'm running RH pro workstation (enterpise linux 3) and my
floppy mounts easily from either desktop (kde or gnome). however,
neither cdrom or cdrom1 (with dvd rw) will mount
> mount /dev/cdrom
and > mount -t udf /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom -r
give the error message, mount: wrong fs type, bad option , bad superblock
on /dev/cdrom, or too many mounted file systems.
The machine's basically new, cpnt failure couldn't be the explntn.
> mount shows neither cdrom nor cdrom1 are mounted, though
/mnt/floppy type msdos (rw) is mounted.
/etc/fstab shows
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom udf,iso9660 noauto,owner,kudzu,ro 0,0
/dev/cdrom1 /mnt/cdrom1 udf,iso9660 noauto,owner,kudzu,ro 0,0
/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto noauto,owner,kudzu 0,0

When the machine boots up, one of the many statements is
"starting automount: No mount points defined"

Question, what am i doing wrong?
