How to mount a .vdi virtual hard drive

I have just been wondering if you can mount a vdi file. If there is no way to do it in Linux itself, if anyone knows any open source mounter that would be great.

The only reason I want to be able to mount the virtual hard drive so I can see the filing system. sometimes I would like to pull a file without booting the machine.
