how to make my modem work in suse 9.0

i am very new to linux after toying around with some minidistros, and i decided to finally get rid of windows (except for a very striped down XP for playing morrowind :)so got suse 9.0 and also Lindows OS free with some magazines. First i installed Lindows, simple and flawless it detected and configured my pci modem, graphics card etc, and had everything working very quickly. For various reasons i dont like it (seems to be everything i dislike about windows) and so i installed suse which detected but wouldn't configure my modem. When i try to use modem it is not responding to commands so i tryed setting manually (well with yast) it. i tried every single device it would let me (it is ttySL0 in lindows - which is a [is it a symlink it called?] to /dev/pts/0. I noticed on startup the module slamr.mo wasn't started up, so i type modprobe slamrmo and it starts with a warning about a tainted kernel. tryed everything again still not working. I took the slamrmo module from lindows and tried with that, and i didnt get the warning this time but still my modem doesnt work. I do not know what else to do, to access the internet i had to reinstall lindows but would rather reinstall suse linux and windowmaker, and if anyone can help i would be most gratefull.

my modem shows in lindows as ALi Corporation Smartlink SmartPCI561 56k modem (prog-if 00 [Generic]) and this is what suse says it is also

it is a pci modem, and i have a pcchips 8325LU motherboard with via chipset and s3prosavage DDR graphics onboard 32mb :o( athlon XP@1800 and thats about all i know about my system. windows says my modem is a netodragon modem if that is any help?

Suse detects the modem, yes. You, have to do all the configureing, Yourself. Try yast and try actually setting the modem up?

i did. i tryed every possible setting that yast offered, with two different versions of the module it needs, still no responce from modem

i also tried isapnp but nothing came back, and pnpdump. yast sees the modem and lets me configure it but always the modem log says no responce from the modem
