Meh, it's a tinkering thing, women'll never understand.

My apologies for not previously inquiring as to if you had an EFI partition... didn't even cross my mind.

At 500 MB though, the EFI System Partition is a little large, it's just to hold the bootloader. On my current laptop, running debian only:

Code:
/dev/sda1 120M 184K 119M 1% /boot/efi
As you see, even 120MB is far in excess, as long as you're using GRUB only. My other laptop used the EFI stub and it needed enough room for the kernel, but even then with a single kernel that was only 50MB.

Forget Debian8.
Choose Debian9 (testing).
I installed a "Debian testing DVD iso" to an USB stick.
Started the Debian9 from the USB.
Made the install (used the full SSD, automated install by accepting the partition proposal from Debian).
Removed the USB.
Now the Notebook ThinkPad T560 booted in Debian9.
I am making the updates. all fine.
Topic closed.

Thanks to everybody for the help.
