How to make bootable ISO image of whole Linux installed?

Hi guys,
I wonder if I can make a bootable ISO image file of whole linux that is already installed on my computer. Here's what I want to do in detail: I have already installed SuSE 9.2 and I have been experiencing some problems with my HD. Since I need a total image of the system copied to DVD (rather a clone) that is supposed to run when I boot from it (DVD) so that I can reinstall the very same system already on my laptop. I just don't want to bother with the package selection and etc.. each time I install. Let me give you an example of what I have in my mind: I had a Ghost image of WinXP shipped along with my laptop which is marked as Recovery DVD. When I am stuck with it, I just insert the DVD, boot from the DVD-ROM and puff.. It simply formats the HD and copies the already-installed XP with all stuff such as applications, drivers...

Would it work if I simply make an ISO file with
Code:

dd
?

Well, thx for the link but I am rather interested in finding a way of stabilizing a list of packages installed, not a routine backup issue. thanks, anyway :)
