How to lower the sound of beep?

This happens on a newly installed centos 5 on my home laptop; the system beep is so loud; at its maximum I presume. The volume control doesn't have any connection to it; even if I set it to mute it would still have the same loud beep. Its very uncomfortable hearing loud beeps during every session.

Does anyone know or suggest a way to lower the volume level of these beeps?

thanks.

I don't think that beeper volume can be controlled in the majority of systems (it doesn't go through mixer). It can be muted though. In X, do:

xset -b off

and on console:

setterm -blength 0

right thanks! so far my remedy is to disable the system beeps from the system-config-sound.

You can also prevent the pcspkr kernel module from loading by adding it as blacklisted in modprobe.d.
