How to lock-down what can be run? RH9
 

Hello,

Just instaleld RH9 on a computer for my daughter to use. All she needs in StarOffice, AIM, Firebird, and Thunderbird. I don't want her to be able to run anything but these applications.

I have them installed, running, and configured as well as the internet, etc.

What I can't seem to figure out is how to remove the icons from the RH panel (bottom left), but only for her. My login should remain as-is.

Any hints, suggestions, better ideas, etc. on how to accomplish this?

I am not sure how to remove them from the panel, but you can determine who can run, write and execute a file with ownership and file permissions. It is a very detailed subject and many tomes have been written about it. I would get one of the manuals from a local book store and follow through with some experimentation. Create a test file and change ownership and access permissions to see how it reacts. I know that doesn't answer your question about removing icons from the panel but it would at least limit her access if she clicked on an area you don't want her to have access to. If you running KDE (Has a K inside a bolt thing on the menu) you can remove links in the K Menu by right-clicking the menu button and clicking menu editor then add or remove application links

If you are running Gnome (Has a Foot icon) you can remove each application link by right-clicking and removing the application from the menu.

Dont know of any easier way than this i dont use either of these window managers.

I must be using the RH desktop because it's a "RedHat", not the typical KDE gear or Foot. I DID, however, check the KDE desktop when I did the install...

So, I'm not sure which was truly installed at this point?

When I right-click over the panel, nothing happens. WHen I try to remove on of the sub-menu items, I get some redhat error saying that "action is not supported" and it won't let me remove the launcher from the panel.

Seems like such a simple thing, but obviously is not...???

Ok i havent really used redhat since 7.2, i didnt realize it had its own windowmanager
