You must give more information for an answer.. Did you sucessful booted ubuntu, went through installation process or are you just stucked in the begining?
You may try installing via usb flash (unetbootin) similary to bootable cd, but before you boot you need to select bootable media in BIOS.

It would not boot, stuck right at the start in boot, the bios does not allow for a USB. The bios setup is DVD first then HDD. ---Thanks

I have an acer aspire 3620 the usb hdd/flashdrive is listed under hdd's instead of usb. Go to hdd there should be a "+" next to hdd's, scroll down to hdd's & expand you should see your usb device. Move it to the top of the list of hdd's you should be able to boot it.

Thanks---- will give it another shot, hoping to get Ubuntu 14.04.1 to work on it
Woops--forgot to put USB stick in first, when booting up, sure enough there it was on the list under HDD. Many thanks for the lesson
