how to load modules automatically

How do I load kernel modules automatically on boot? Surely I could put separate modprobe command to some startup script, but is there a file from which the listed modules are automatically loaded?

It varies according to distribution, IIRC, but it's /etc/modules for Debian / [k]ubuntu.

I'm using Fedora Core 4 and /etc/modules doesn't exist. So, does anybody know which file FC uses?

What I remember from Fedora Core 2, it's /etc/modules.conf.

Adding `modprobe name_of_module` to /etc/rc.d/rc.local might do the job.
