Take a look in /proc and less the needed files.

for kernel use uname -a

RedHat systems usually have a release file in /etc
$ less /etc/fedora-release
results in: Fedora release 10 (Cambridge)

Try
$ less /etc/redhat-release
on a RHEL system

Linux

For HW try

lspci
lshw
dmidecode
dmesg
