How to know if my drives are working after recieving new hard drive.

My hard drive died in my new comps so I got a new one. I've installed Ubuntu and now it seems both of my CD/DVD drives aren't working. I don't think one of them has ever worked. Have I missed something I need to install? I've gone through all the updates etc but the one that was working before doesn't read my audio CD and I can hear a quiet clicking noise. The other is worse that before, when I open it, automatically it closes itself the second it opens.

My warranty on this computer is going to run out soon so I need to know how I can double check that the drives need to be replaced. I have a Dell comp so there is no retail store that I can have it checked in.

It sound to me like your cd drives are going/gone bad by what you've said. If it's still under warranty and you live in the states, BestBuy handles Dell pc's, so you may be able to take it there. If that's not an opption a cd/dvd burner is not that expencive to buy and put in your self.

Check the hardware, Linux automatically finds the drives and loads the approppriate modules (drivers) for them

What types of drives? Hardware specifications? Distribution specs other than ubuntu (version level).

How do you have your drives laid out, what channels & master/slave,Cable select or DS configurations?

Not really enough information to really diagnose.

There is diagnostic software you can use as well (Live Test CD), but I don't think there are any tests specifically for CDROM/DVDROM drives..
