You should try searching before asking a question. More often then not, the answer is already out there.

How can I determine which runlevel my system is currently in?

This may not work on Red Hat 8, but give it a try.

runlevel

shows:

<previous runlevel> <current run level>

ex:

N 5 <---- N means that you didn't change from any runlevel since boot. 5 means you are in run level 5 now.

if you switch to 3 from 5 then this will show:

5 3

self explainatory :)
