Ctrl + Alt + Backspace or
go to console: Ctrl + Alt + F1, type: killall X or
go to console: Ctrl + Alt + F1, type: /etc/init.d/gdm stop

First normally restarts Xserver, the other stop it permanently. Restart by typing: startx or /etc/init.d/gdm start.
