Question how do I save settings of graphics please

I am very new to linux (suse 8.2) and after many tears and installs I finally have my monitor and Nvidia 3D in what seems to be a stable(?) configuration: they work . I have had them working before then messed up and had to start from scratch using what seemed to be a totally different method to the first install and consequentley took almost as long to sort out.(Days not hours)

I need a simple method using simple tar. to save this configuration to the hard disk (I only have one) so that if graphics stop working I can restore monitor and Graphics settings.

PLEASE KEEP IT SIMPLE.... thankyou, thankyou, thankyou.

nb. I have created two tar files so far; 1 for boot and one for /etc/X11. Have I sort of got the right idea? What other dir and files need to be saved? Are simple tar files sufficient to reconfigure an install upon extraction?

I have searched for tar; backup; simple; on these forums and cannot find the answer.
