Question how to install xscreensaver in Kubuntu - Hardy?

Hello- I really like xscreensaver and would like to install it in Kubuntu. I did try to sudo apt-get install xscreensaver, but it does not come up when I go to my screensavers. What should I do next?

Thank you--

When I type xscreensaver-demo in the terminal, xscreensaver preferences menu pops up, but each one I click on brings a message"Error- /usr/share/backgrounds does not exist"

apt-cache search xscreensaver

You might want to install:
kscreensaver-xsavers - KDE hooks for standard xscreensavers
kscreensaver-xsavers-extra - KDE hooks for standard xscreensavers
kscreensaver-xsavers-kde4 - KDE hooks for standard xscreensavers
kscreensaver-kde4 - additional screen savers released with KDE4
kscreensaver - additional screen savers released with KDE
xscreensaver-data - data files to be shared among screensaver frontends
xscreensaver-gl - GL(Mesa) screen hacks for xscreensaver
xscreensaver-data-extra - data files to be shared among screensaver frontends
xscreensaver-gl-extra - GL(Mesa) screen hacks for xscreensaver

Some of these at least are needed. I'm not sure which in your system though, so try them all.

installing xscreensaver in Kubuntu

I just followed this procedure for 9.04, and it worked for me:

open a terminal and paste the following:

sudo mkdir /usr/share/backgrounds
type in your root password (if asked), then paste in:

sudo apt-get install xscreensaver xscreensaver-data xscreensaver-data-extra xscreensaver-gl xscreensaver-gl-extra
After it finishes installing, navigate to ~/.kde/Autostart/ (using either command line or GUI, whichever you prefer)

create a file called xscreensaver.desktop

paste in the following five lines:

[Desktop Entry]
Exec=xscreensaver -nosplash
save and exit, and you should be good to go!

hope that helps!

Thumbs up 1st reply and question

Good Morning
Have installed Kubuntu 9.04 on a IBM laptop and it is going swimmingly
Have been able to figure most everything on my own which was my first criteria.
Right now just looking for screensaver app to install.
Tried installing Linksys Network Magic as Wine app with no success and then Spiceworks also with no success.
Have been circling Linux for some time looking for an OS like Ubuntu/Kubuntu and very happy with what I am seeing. May be able to assist clients who are looking into Linux now.
