You first need to unzip and untar with the following command

tar -zxf wine-20040615.tar.gz

that will make a directory called wine-20040615

cd wine-20040615

if you are running as a normal user do

otherwise you will have to do the following one after the other

make depend
make install

if you don't have a ~/.wine directory download "wine tools" from

install it and run it with the command wt.

It will give you the option to install a .wine directory for you.
