For lack of time, the easiest way to install codecs for Ubuntu is to install a program script called Automatrix2 just follow the directions on the site. If you want to learn though you may want to do a search for installing codecs and do it the manual way.

Or install ubuntu-restricted-extras from Synaptic.

Automatix2 is pretty handy though as it can locate and download all the codec stuff and extra stuff as well. A sort of one stop shop for some basic restricted extras that can make life easier. Copy and paste from a browser into a terminal is your cup of tea? Try https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu

I assure you, its really easy, just follow the instruction, copy and paste from the browser into the terminal (by the way the paste shortcut in a terminal is shift-control-v rather than the usual control-v)and hitting return at obvious points. And thats that. Going into synaptic and installing the ubuntu restricted extras and going into automatix2 to sniff around for other stuff is still advisable though.
