how to install vlc media player
(1)I downloaded the required rpm's from following website http://packman.links2linux.org
(2)Then I installed them using rpm -i vlc-0.9.6-0.pm.1.src.rpm Similiarly for libvlc2-0.9.6-0.pm.1.i586.rpm libvlccore0-0.9.6-0.pm.1.i586.rpm vlc-0.9.6-0.pm.1.i586.rpm vlc-aout-pulse-0.9.6-0.pm.1.i586.rpm vlc-gnome-0.9.6-0.pm.1.i586.rpm vlc-mozillaplugin-0.9.6-0.pm.1.i586.rpm vlc-noX-0.9.6-0.pm.1.i586.rpm vlc-qt-0.9.6-0.pm.1.i586.rpm vlc-devel-0.9.6-0.pm.1.i586.rpm (3)Whichever of above showed missing dependencies then I installed them by adding --nodeps option to the corresponding command. (4)Now when I open a media file with other application I can see vlc media player alongwith its icon in the list but when I open that media file with vlc then nothing happens. In system monitor I can see vlc sleeping. (5)What should I do? |
I'm not quite sure what you expected when you overrode everything with --nodeps.
What distro are you using? |
Just in case you are using opensuse, first, use rpm -e to remove everything you installed above, and follow the instructions here http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-suse.html to install vlc.

Most likely whatever distro you're using, vlc is in its repositories, so it should be reasonably easy to install... What distro is the big question. IGF |
And here are few approaches from vlc. http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

Thank you all for replying
I am using open suse 10.3 whose cd iso image i got from website. But my problem is my computer is not connected to internet so I have to do all installation offline. That is why I downloaded the required rpm's from site mentioned above. Can you tell me what other rpm vlc requires so I can download them from nearest cyber cafe. Does vlc also require wxwidget to display the window & buttons? |
Can you use Yast if the computer is not directly hooked up to the internet?
With Puppy Linux you can download a single file with a PET extension that will install a PET-package (on or off-line) easy as pie. Guess I'm spoiled. |
His issue is dependency resolution, not the ability to install packages per se.
sumeet, I'd remove all the packages, and as you install each rpm, take a careful note of what it requires that isn't installed. Do this for each package, then download those you need. It may take more than one go I'm afraid. |
Thank you billymayday.I will do that though it will be time consuming.
(1)Does vlc media player require wxwidget compulsory to show the button & windows. (2)Also is there any website that can provide the required rpm. What I know is (a)http://packman.links2linux.org (b)ftp://packman.inode.at/suse/10.3/i686/ |
If I knew one, I'd have let you know. Nothing stood out.
Here are the packages that would be installed on a CentOS machine for example, but I'm no at a SuSe box. Code:
Package Arch Version Repository Size |
