How to install things in Ubuntu using an Ubuntu Live CD

Hello everybody, I have been used Ubuntu many years ago but I wonder if it's possible to install packages or different things from the ubuntu software center or from different sources without installing ubuntu.

What I mean is that I'm using an Ubuntu live CD in a PC but I'm trying Ubuntu with the CD (It's Not installed) and it seems that I can't install anything, my question is: żIs there a way to install things in Ubuntu trying the live CD (without Ubuntu Installed)?

Thanks for your help and your answers

I would suggest that you look into booting from a thumb drive instead;easier and a more common approach. Knoppix will allow what I think your suggesting and Unetbootin has settings to create storage areas.

Short answer: NO

Long answer: NO, well on an CD you can't, but as theKbStockpiler mentioned if you have it installed in an USB stick then it is possible, but it isn't the same as having it in the hard drive thou.

Now you can try Tinycore Linux which runs from LiveCD or USB stick and you can load programs on fly and do things almost as it was installed, there is a way too to make those programs loaded persistent if you are using USB stick, but Tinycore have way different philosophy of Ubuntu.

Regards

The easiest way to do what you want to do is to actually install Ubuntu onto a usb flash drive. You'll need one about 16GB to do it and have room to move you can also have persistence but you wont have much room for a /home partition on the drive.

If you use unetbootin, you aren't actually installing instead you are extracting the LiveCD and placing it as is onto the usb, Casper is still going to contain a squashfs image and you are not going to be able to write to the squashfs image and have it remember what applications or updates you downloaded to it.
